Brief introduction into denCity.net
brief
denCity.net creates virtual networks of real places.
QR-codes (2D barcodes) are used to tag buildings and urban sites. your mobile camera phone can read these tags. simply shoot them and log in to denCity.net.
denCity.net provides information to the specific place.
Via denCity.net, you can browse through the web of tags. The tag is the key. Once shot, you can always return to the places, virtually. It's the city in your pocket.
Anyone can tag places and thus create a new denCity-site.
Just log in to denCity.net - create a spot on the map and print the generated tag to attach it to the real-world location.
[The online demonstration supports tag creation in the city of Aachen, Germany]
the mobile and denCity.net
  1. tagID is read from QR Code *
  2. tagID is sent to server via UMTS
  3. location specific information is received from dencity.net
* QR Codes can already be read by common mobiles in Japan, in Germany Gavitec develops code reading applications (for some mobiles).
QR Code is the keyhole to denCity.NET

QR Code. Contains:
  • tagID (unique number that identifies tag)
  • name of tag (to describe the tag before going online)
  • coordinates of tag (optional, otherwise on server)
When shot, your mobile logs into denCity.NET and sends the tagID to get additional information, like:
  • useful information (like opening hours, can be stored offline for later access)
  • links to other places by the creator of the tag
  • links to other places by other users (e.g. pedestrians)
  • link to an iMode or WAP address
  • link to an Internet address
  • real address
  • quality (everybody can rate a tag)
  • guestbook with user comments
  • forum with discussion about the place
keitai (mobile) user interface
navigating through denCity.net
Smoothly combining the virtual with the real, each tag in denCity.net has a physical location. A map can be underlaid to allow easy orientation, even substituting a navigation system!
There is no need for GPS, RFID and thelike: Each tag has its own coordinates by which the keitai knows its position.
augmented city
denCity.net augments, ie. enriches a city. Unlike pages in the internet, denCity’s tags are linked to places, but also can link to the internet, iMode or other tags within denCity.net.

how to join denCity.net?

participation is easy! You create a tag online on the city map ... denCity.net generates your QR Code for printout. Just pin it at the location (e.g. your store, your house, the blackboard of your uni...) and let it be a part of denCity.net.
